2016 Kinext flywheel technology

  back to the timeline

S4 Manufacturing is a developer and manufacturer of innovative energy storage and peak systems. This latest innovative flywheel technology is called Kinext. In the modern world, electrical networks are constantly interrupted by peaks and troughs. These deviations cause damage and disrupt a clean and stable electrical service.

This frequency control and emergency power system has been connected to the public Tennet at various locations in the Netherlands since 2016. The system is designed with a rotor of 5.5 tons, has a diameter of 3 meters and rotates at the outer edge at a speed of 1,000 km/h. The size and extreme precision required to achieve this technical feat was of a class of its own and has proven necessary to achieve the extremely high efficiency. One flywheel can switch 1 megawatt of power on and off within 10 milliseconds. At the time, we installed a fully operational multi-system of 5 megawatts on our site at our location in Almelo. Nowadays we are already talking about a 10 megawatt system.
